Scholarships for Bangladeshi students: how funding actually works
Why most students chase the wrong awards — and where the money Bangladeshi applicants really win comes from.

Chevening asks for 2,800 hours of work experience before it will consider an application. On a 35-hour week that is about two years of full-time work, and every hour of it has to fall after your undergraduate degree finished.
A large share of the students who name Chevening first at a consultancy desk do not have those hours. They spend a month on the essays anyway. The requirement is published in plain English on Chevening’s own site, and checking it takes one page load.
That gap is the whole problem in miniature. The scholarships Bangladeshi students can name are the ones with the highest bar and the smallest intake. The money that takes real weight off a bill is parked where few students look: on university fee-waiver pages, on individual department pages, and inside the recruitment budgets institutions set aside for particular countries.
Types of scholarships for Bangladeshi students
Funding for international students comes in four shapes. Students pour most of their energy into the government awards and almost none into the university ones, which is the wrong way round.
1. University scholarships and fee waivers
Universities discount their own tuition as a matter of routine budgeting. Most of these awards are merit-based. Most are partial, not full. A surprising number are applied automatically the moment your offer is generated, with no separate form to fill in at all.
Some are decided by nothing more competitive than applying early.
If you have three free evenings to spend on funding this month, spend all three here. The odds in this category are better than in any other one on the page.
2. Government and fully funded awards
These are the famous ones. They are also the smallest, judged against a global applicant pool, and each runs on its own calendar with its own entry bar.
- Chevening (UK) funds one-year master’s degrees and requires 2,800 hours of work experience acquired after your undergraduate degree. You can list up to fifteen separate employment periods to reach that total, and full-time, part-time, voluntary and internship work all count towards it.
- Commonwealth Scholarships. Bangladesh is an eligible country. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission runs three separate master’s-level routes, Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships, Commonwealth Shared Scholarships and Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships, each with its own eligibility rules.
- Australia Awards are Australian government development scholarships with one application round a year. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade publishes opening and closing dates for every participating country; the 2027 intake round opened on 1 February 2026 and closed on 30 April 2026.
- Erasmus Mundus (EU). You do not apply to the European Commission. You apply to the consortium of universities running the specific joint master’s, usually between October and January for a start the following academic year.
- Fulbright (USA) is administered country by country, by binational Fulbright commissions or by US embassies, and eligibility rules differ by country of citizenship.
- MEXT (Japan) has two routes in, embassy recommendation and university recommendation. They are separate processes on separate timetables.
- Türkiye Bursları takes individual applications only through its own government portal.
- Chinese Government Scholarships are administered by the China Scholarship Council on behalf of the Ministry of Education, through the Study in China portal. Applications split into Type A, routed through your embassy, and Type B, routed through a designated university.
Apply where you fit the published criteria. Do not build a plan around any of them, and do not let a year burn while you wait on one result.
3. Faculty, departmental and subject-specific awards
Smaller, less advertised, much less contested. These are frequently listed nowhere except the department’s own page, three clicks deep, so searching the word “scholarship” on a university website never surfaces them. An engineering faculty may hold an award that only engineering applicants ever see. Ask a representative what your department offers.
4. Country and region-specific awards
Plenty of universities ring-fence money for particular markets, sometimes explicitly for South Asian or Bangladeshi students, because they want a presence here and a cohort that brings more students next year. This funding is rarely advertised loudly and is very easy to ask about directly.
The awards everybody in your batch has heard of are the awards everybody in your batch is applying to. The obscure ones are obscure because nobody looked, not because they are harder to win.
What decides whether you get funded
What committees weigh
- Academic record. Consistent results matter more than one strong year.
- English proficiency. A score above the minimum often unlocks better awards, not just admission.
- Fit. A clear line from what you have studied to what you are applying for.
- Timing. Many awards run first come, first served until the budget is gone.
- Evidence. Work experience, projects, publications, volunteering, leadership.
Most of that was settled years ago. Timing is what you can still change this week.
Apply early: the cheapest advantage available to you
A large share of university funding is allocated on a rolling basis. The pool opens with the cycle and empties as offers go out. The same transcript, the same test score and the same personal statement that win a waiver in November can get nothing in June, because by June there is nothing left to hand out.
Families find this hard to believe. A strong file submitted in spring meets “no funding available”, while a weaker one submitted the previous autumn drew a partial waiver, and no admissions officer explains it in those words, because inside the office the two were never set against each other. One arrived while there was a budget. The other arrived after it had been spent. Merit did not separate them; the calendar did.
Since the intake you target sets the month your funding application arrives, the two decisions are the same decision. The guide on choosing between the September and January intake lays out the calendar.
Writing an application that survives the second read
- Answer the question that was actually asked. Reviewers read hundreds of these and recycled text shows up inside a paragraph.
- Be specific. “I want to serve my country” says nothing; “I want to work on water treatment for the coastal districts, which is why I chose this environmental engineering programme” says something a committee can act on.
- Keep one through-line. Your background, your course choice and your stated plans should read as one story rather than three.
- Choose referees who taught you. A detailed letter from the teacher who supervised your final-year project beats a polite paragraph from a department head who cannot picture your face.
- Write it yourself. Agent-written statements read like agent-written statements, and are increasingly flagged as such.
When an office offers to “prepare” your personal statement, ask to see the draft before it is submitted. What comes back is often the same document with the university name swapped out, and the admissions officer reading it in Manchester or Melbourne has seen that template before.
Studying abroad from Bangladesh with a scholarship: the working timeline
- 12–18 months out. Shortlist universities. For each one, note its own scholarships and their deadlines in the same sheet as the course itself.
- 12 months out. Sit your English test, and aim above the minimum. The gap between meeting the requirement and comfortably clearing it is where the better awards live.
- 10–12 months out. Apply in the first wave, while the funding pool is still full.
- Alongside all of that. Apply to one or two fully funded government awards, but only where you meet the published criteria.
- At offer stage. Email the admissions contact and ask whether any further waiver applies to you. Sometimes one does, and it is never volunteered.
Two ways Bangladeshi students lose money on this
No legitimate scholarship charges a fee to be considered. Any “guaranteed scholarship” that requires payment upfront is not a scholarship. If a dalal in a small office wants money to “confirm” an award before you have applied to anything, you are buying a receipt and nothing else.
Do not fake documents. Fabricated transcripts, bank statements or experience letters end an application permanently and can carry a multi-year immigration ban. That ban follows you when you try a different country.
If you are still choosing who to work with, the guide on how to choose and verify a study abroad consultancy in Bangladesh covers what to check first.
Ask a human instead of searching a website
Scholarship pages are written by marketing teams with a lawyer looking over their shoulder. They are built to be safe first and clear second. “Scholarships available for eligible international students” is the most common sentence in the sector and the least useful one.
A university representative standing at a stall will tell you in one sentence what a student with your exact results qualifies for, including the awards their own website buries. Carry your transcripts, your test score if you have it, and a typed list of your shortlisted courses. Then put the same question to every desk on the floor: what does a student with these grades, in this subject, qualify for at your institution?
Fifteen versions of that answer in one afternoon is a better funding map than six weeks of searching will produce. The guide to education fairs in Bangladesh explains how to work a floor properly, and you can register for the 65th BIEE before you go.
Frequently asked questions
How much work experience do I need for Chevening?
At least 2,800 hours, acquired after you finished your undergraduate degree. Chevening describes that as roughly two years of full-time work on a 35-hour week, and you can reach the total by listing up to fifteen separate employment periods. Full-time and part-time jobs, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships all count. Applicants are eligible once they hit 2,800 hours even if they accumulated them in under two years, and applications below the threshold are rejected. Confirm the current wording on Chevening’s own work experience page before you start drafting.
How can I get a fully funded scholarship to study abroad from Bangladesh?
Apply to the fully funded government programmes you qualify for on paper: Chevening, Commonwealth Scholarships, Australia Awards, Erasmus Mundus, Fulbright, MEXT, Türkiye Bursları or the Chinese Government Scholarships. Then treat that as one line of your plan rather than the whole plan, because these awards are decided against a global applicant pool and fund very few people. Most Bangladeshi students who end up paying less than the sticker price get there through a university’s own scholarship or fee waiver, claimed early.
Which scholarships can I apply for straight after graduation, with no work experience?
The university’s own scholarships and fee waivers, which are the largest category by volume and are usually assessed on your academic record, not your CV. Several government schemes also take fresh graduates: MEXT, Türkiye Bursları and the Chinese Government Scholarships all admit students at master’s level without a Chevening-style hours requirement, though each sets its own age, grade and language conditions. Chevening and Australia Awards are the ones to skip until you have the experience behind you.
What CGPA do I need for a scholarship abroad?
There is no single cut-off, and an agent who quotes you one is guessing. Committees look at whether your results are consistent across years rather than strong in one, then weigh that alongside your English score, the fit between your background and the course, your evidence of work or projects, and when your application arrived. A modest record submitted in the first wave often does better than a stronger one submitted late.
What is the difference between a full scholarship and a tuition fee waiver?
A fully funded award of the Chevening or MEXT type is built to cover the cost of studying. A university fee waiver reduces what that one institution charges you, usually partially, and leaves your living costs, visa costs and travel exactly where they were. Both are worth having. Only one of them is realistically available to most applicants, and that is the waiver, so work out your total first-year cost before deciding whether a partial waiver closes your gap.
Is the Commonwealth Scholarship still open for Bangladeshi students?
Bangladesh is listed as an eligible country by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK, which runs three master’s-level routes: Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships, Commonwealth Shared Scholarships and Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships. Eligibility and the open period differ between them, so check the Commission’s own scholarships page, not a consultancy’s Facebook post.
When do Australia Awards applications open?
Once a year, on dates the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade publishes country by country. The 2027 intake round opened on 1 February 2026 and closed on 30 April 2026. Because it is a single annual window rather than a rolling one, missing it costs you a full year, so check the published dates for Bangladesh before you assume the round is still running.
Can I get a scholarship after I already have my offer letter?
Sometimes, and it costs you one email to find out. At offer stage, ask the admissions contact directly whether any further waiver applies to your profile. Universities do not always volunteer this, particularly where the award is small or discretionary.
Do universities give more money for a higher IELTS score?
They can. English proficiency is one of the things funding committees weigh, and a score above the course minimum often unlocks awards that a bare pass does not. Booking your test early enough to sit it twice is part of the funding strategy, not something separate from it. The guide to IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and Duolingo in Bangladesh covers which test to book.
An agency says it can guarantee me a scholarship if I pay a fee. Is that real?
No. No legitimate scholarship asks you to pay to be considered. A guarantee attached to an upfront payment is a sales device, and the money does not come back when the award fails to appear.
