IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and Duolingo in Bangladesh: which test to book

Which test? Which version of that test? And which test centre, in which city, on which date? Those are three separate decisions. Most applicants from Bangladesh answer the first one, guess the second, and leave the third until the coaching course has already finished.

Your English result gates everything: the offer, the scholarship band, and in several countries the visa itself. Booking the wrong version of the right test is one of the most common and most expensive administrative mistakes Bangladeshi students make.

Which English test does your course accept?

Why IELTS for UKVI is a separate booking

IELTS for UKVI covers the same content under a different administration. It is run as an approved Secure English Language Test and produces its own report form, and that report form is what a visa route reads when it checks your English.

Everything follows from that one distinction. A university may be perfectly happy with a standard IELTS Academic result for admission, while the visa route behind that same course wants the SELT version. Two requirements, two decisions, one test fee you pay twice if you assumed they were the same thing. The coaching centre carries no responsibility for that call; you do. Where you can sit IELTS in Bangladesh

IELTS is delivered here by two official partners. Both are equally valid, both publish their own dates and fees, and both run centres well outside Dhaka. Choose on geography and calendar, not on reputation.

British Council Bangladesh

The British Council delivers IELTS across the country, listing coverage in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, Jashore, Feni, Rangpur, Cumilla and Sylhet. Registration and payment can be done at any British Council IELTS Registration Centre. Within Dhaka the test has run at several venues — Banani, Bashundhara, Dhanmondi, Uttara, and Pallabi in Mirpur — so the venue is something your booking assigns you, not something to assume from where you took your coaching.

Computer-delivered IELTS is narrower than the paper network. The British Council offers IELTS on computer in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet, with results available in one to five days. Only Listening, Reading and Writing move to a screen; the Speaking test is still face to face with a trained IELTS examiner.

The published fee is BDT 20,250 for both paper-based and computer-delivered formats, and the British Council’s own historical tariff documents show this figure has been revised over time. Confirm the current number on their dates, fees and locations page, not on a coaching centre’s poster.

IDP IELTS Bangladesh

IDP is the other official IELTS partner, with its own centres and its own city-wise fee page. Its Bangladesh test centre finder lists locations in Dhaka — Banani, Bashundhara, Dhanmondi, Mirpur and Panthapath among them — plus Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Cumilla, Bogura, Barishal, Narayanganj and Narsingdi.

For a student in Bogura, Barishal or Narsingdi, that list is the whole argument. A test centre in your own district removes an overnight bus, a hotel booking, and the risk of walking into a Speaking slot on four hours of sleep. Run both providers’ centre finders for your district first. The assumption that everything happens in Dhaka costs candidates money and sleep for no reason.

PTE Academic test centres in Bangladesh

PTE Academic is widely accepted in Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, and Pearson maintains a Bangladesh page for the test. What Pearson does not publish on its public pages is a list of Bangladeshi cities. Those pages say only that PTE runs at close to 500 test centres in more than 115 countries, and tell candidates to choose a test in order to find their nearest test centre and next available slot.

So run that search yourself, for Bangladesh, at the point when PTE first appears on your shortlist. If the availability checker returns nothing usable in your city in your month, PTE is not a real option for you no matter how many universities accept it. If it does return dates, remember that acceptance still varies by university and by visa route, which matters most if Australia is your destination.

TOEFL iBT from Bangladesh

Bangladesh appears on ETS’s published list of countries where the TOEFL iBT test is available. Registration runs through an ETS account: you create the account first, then schedule online and pick from whatever test centres and dates the system returns for you.

ETS also runs at-home testing, which carries its own requirements for your computer and the room you sit in. Read those requirements properly and well ahead. Finding out on the morning of the test that your setup fails the check costs you the whole fee. TOEFL has the strongest acceptance in the USA, so for American applications it is usually the default choice — and there, the number that matters is the department’s minimum, not the university’s headline requirement.

Book direct, or do not book at all

Register only through British Council Bangladesh, IDP IELTS Bangladesh, their listed registration partners, or the official Pearson and ETS systems. Never through an intermediary who takes your money and “arranges” a slot for you.

Because test fees in Bangladesh are large enough to matter to most families, a small industry has grown up around them: people who will register on your behalf, people who claim to have access to fuller dates, people who take cash and send you a screenshot. A registration made by somebody else, in a name and email you do not control, is a registration you cannot fix when something goes wrong two weeks before the sitting.

The fee is also a reason to slow down. It is real money out of a household already funding attestations, courier charges and eventually a visa fee. Read the whole first-year cost checklist before you decide when to sit the test, because the English exam is the first line item in a long list, not a standalone expense.

The score that looks fine and is not

Section scores average out into an overall band, and averaging hides weakness. You can clear a course’s overall requirement comfortably and still fall under the per-section floor that same course sets, usually in writing. The certificate looks like a pass and the application is rejected anyway.

This happens constantly, and it happens to strong students, because the entire preparation industry in Bangladesh advertises the overall band. Find out what floor your course sets for each section before you build a study plan around a single headline number. University representatives answer that question on the spot, along with whether they accept a Medium of Instruction letter and whether a pre-sessional route exists — so an afternoon at an education fair in Bangladesh settles the question faster than a month of asking around, and considerably faster than whatever a consultancy tells you without showing you the source.

Four checks to run before booking

1. Which test does the specific course accept? (Not the university in general.)
2. Which test does the visa route require? (These can differ.)
3. What is the minimum in each band, not just the overall score? Many courses set a per-section floor that catches people out.
4. How long is the result valid, and will it still be valid on your intake date?

Validity is the check that ruins whole application cycles. A result taken early enough to feel comfortable can expire before an intake that gets pushed back by a deferral, a visa delay or a change of destination. Line the validity window up against the intake you are now targeting, not the one you were targeting when you booked.

Budget for sitting it twice

Plan the cost and the calendar for two attempts. A retake is common and is not a failure, but a retake booked three weeks before your deadline is a problem. Sit the test 10–12 months before your intended intake so a second attempt is still possible without missing the funding round.

That timeline sounds excessive to most families, especially in the weeks after HSC results when everyone in the batch books the same month. Work backwards through the sequence: you sit the test, you wait for the result, you decide whether the score is good enough for the universities you want rather than the ones that will take you, you possibly retake, and only then do you apply, chase scholarship deadlines, assemble financial documents and file a visa application.

Students who compress that sequence into one panicked season end up with fewer choices, not worse scores: the scholarship rounds close while they are still waiting for a report form.

A pre-sessional English course is an extra programme, with its own fee, its own weeks and its own accommodation cost, bolted onto the front of your degree. Avoiding it by pushing your score up is one of the highest-return decisions available to a Bangladeshi applicant, and it costs nothing but preparation time.
