Study in the UK from Bangladesh: a practical 2026 guide

Entry requirements, the Student visa route, real costs, and the mistakes that get Bangladeshi applications refused.

Study in the UK from Bangladesh — entry, CAS, Student visa, arrival

£1,529 a month if you will be living in London. £1,171 a month anywhere else. Up to nine months of it, sitting in an acceptable account for 28 consecutive days that end within 31 days of the day you press submit.

That is the UK maintenance requirement, and it is the most common reason a Bangladeshi file that deserved to succeed does not. Not grades. Not English. A calendar and a bank balance.

The rest of it is easier than the folklore suggests. The taught master’s runs a single year, the institutions are recognised wherever you take the certificate, and you are in English from the first lecture. Money is where files fail, so this guide starts there and works outward.

UK student immigration policy has been rewritten several times in recent years, including the rules on dependants and the length of the Graduate Route. Confirm the current requirement on gov.uk or with the university before you pay a deposit. A rule your boro bhai relied on two intakes ago may simply not exist any more.

UK student visa maintenance funds: what your bank statement has to prove

You must show tuition plus living costs (maintenance funds) held for a required period before you apply. The living-cost figures and the holding rule are published by the Home Office, and the one-off charges are published alongside them.

Item Current figure
Living costs, studying in London £1,529 per month, for up to 9 months
Living costs, studying outside London £1,171 per month, for up to 9 months
How long the funds must be held 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the date you apply
Student visa application fee, applying from outside the UK £558
Immigration Health Surcharge £776 per year for students and their dependants

The word doing the damage in that third row is held. The requirement is not “have the money”. It is “have had the money, in an acceptable account, for the whole period”. Cash that lands in the account the week before you submit does not satisfy a rule about a holding period, however genuine the cash is.

Bangladeshi families get caught by this more than most, and almost never because the money isn’t there. It is sitting in a father’s business account. It arrives after a plot in Savar finally sells. A chacha in Sharjah transfers it the moment he hears the offer is confirmed. All honest money, none of it any help if it moves after the clock should already have been running.

Start the holding period before you think you need it, not on the day the CAS lands. And learn to explain your own bank statement out loud, in your own words, without reading off a paper the agency handed you. An answer you cannot give yourself becomes an inconsistency, and inconsistencies get files refused.

Treat the table as today’s figures, not permanent ones. They are revised periodically. What counts is the version on gov.uk on the morning you apply.

Do you qualify?

Applying to study in the UK after HSC

Many universities accept HSC directly. Others require a foundation year or an International Year One first. No national rule settles it. That is how two consultancies on the same floor of a Banani office building give you confident, contradictory answers and are both right about the universities they happen to represent. A-Levels open the same doors and sometimes different ones.

Ask the institution course by course, not university by university, and keep the reply as an email.

Applying for a master’s

You need a recognised bachelor’s degree. Most universities look for a CGPA around 2.8–3.0 on a 4.0 scale for taught master’s, with higher bars at more selective institutions.

If your CGPA falls under that line, do not let an agent wave it away, and do not assume it is fatal either. Put it to an admissions representative face to face, transcript in hand. They can look at it and answer in one sentence.

The fastest way to get that answer

UK institutions attend the Bangladesh International Education Expo in numbers every edition. Bring your transcripts and your English result and you can get an eligibility read, a total-cost figure and often a conditional offer in one conversation, which beats any email thread. Come with the awkward questions ready: the CGPA one, the foundation-year one, the SELT one. Read how education fairs in Bangladesh work before you go, and run every name you collect through the GOV.UK degree-awarding register the same evening.

The English test that counts is not always the one you booked

IELTS is the most widely accepted test from Bangladesh. That part is easy. The complication is that for visa purposes, some courses require an approved SELT (Secure English Language Test), meaning IELTS for UKVI, not the standard academic test.

The usual sequence runs like this. A coaching centre in Farmgate books whatever it books for everybody, the score comes back fine, the certificate goes off. Weeks later, at CAS stage, the university asks for the UKVI version. Retest, second fee, second wait, and an intake that was comfortable is now tight.

Confirm which version your university and your course require before you book the test, and keep the confirmation as an email you can produce later.

PTE Academic and TOEFL are accepted by many institutions, and some universities accept a Medium of Instruction certificate or their own internal test. Acceptance varies by university, not by country. Once you know what your course wants, our guide to IELTS, PTE and TOEFL test centres in Bangladesh covers where to book it.

Documents, and the two that catch Bangladeshi applicants

Document checklist

  • Valid passport
  • CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from your university
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • English test result in the format your course requires
  • Financial documents meeting the current maintenance requirement
  • Tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic (required for applicants from Bangladesh)
  • ATAS certificate, if your course is in a listed sensitive subject

The TB test has to come from a Home Office approved clinic, so a report from your neighbourhood diagnostic centre will not be accepted. GOV.UK publishes the approved clinic list for Bangladesh, and the certificate you get is valid for six months from the date of the x-ray, which means testing far too early is its own kind of mistake.

ATAS applies only to listed sensitive subjects, so find out early whether yours is one, not after you have booked a flight. The full document checklist for studying abroad from Bangladesh goes through what to attest and what to translate.

How the process runs, in order

  1. Shortlist courses and universities. 12 to 18 months before your intended intake is comfortable.
  2. Apply directly or through the university’s authorised representative. Undergraduate applications often go through UCAS.
  3. Receive an offer, usually conditional at first.
  4. Meet the conditions (final results, English score) to convert it to an unconditional offer.
  5. Pay the deposit and receive your CAS.
  6. Apply for the Student visa, pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, complete biometrics, submit your TB test.
  7. Travel. If your course lasts more than 6 months you can arrive up to 1 month before it starts, and never before the start date printed on the visa itself.

Two timing facts govern that sequence. The earliest you can apply from outside the UK is six months before your course starts, which sets the outer edge of the whole schedule. And the CAS arrives at step five, not step three. An offer letter is a university saying it will teach you. A CAS is the university sponsoring your visa application. Students celebrate the first and then lose weeks waiting for the second because a deposit had not been paid. If you are going through an agency, ask whose authorised representative they are for each specific university, then read our guide on choosing and verifying a study abroad consultancy in Bangladesh.

Which intake, and when to start

  • September / autumn is the main intake. Widest course choice, most scholarships, most competition.
  • January / winter is a genuine second chance, offered by many but not all universities.
  • May is limited, mostly at specific institutions and for specific programmes.

Work backwards from the intake, because visa processing, CAS issuance and financial-holding periods all take real time. Starting three months before a September intake is late.

If results land close enough to September that the whole thing becomes a scramble, January is not a downgrade. A rushed September file refused on documents costs you far more than a January start ever would. We compare the two in September or January intake.

What a UK year costs

Cost varies enormously by city and institution, so treat any single number you read online with suspicion. Budget in three parts.

  • Tuition, the figure the university publishes for your specific course and year.
  • Living costs. London is substantially more expensive than most other UK cities. The maintenance figures give you a floor, not a realistic budget.
  • One-off costs: the £558 visa fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge at £776 per year, flights, initial deposit, TB test.

Families here do not budget in pounds. They budget in taka, in one lump, and the lump has to cover the ticket, the first month’s rent and the deposit that never came up. Ask every university for a total first-year figure, not just tuition. A good representative gives it without hesitating; one who changes the subject has told you something useful. Our first-year cost checklist lists the lines people forget.

If the total lands somewhere your family cannot honestly reach, better to know it now than two years into a loan. A British degree taught on a branch campus in Kuala Lumpur, awarded by the same UK university, is the option most Dhaka families never price — we set it out in studying in Malaysia from Bangladesh.

Scholarships and fee waivers

  • University scholarships, merit-based, often applied automatically on your offer, frequently partial. These are the ones most Bangladeshi students end up with.
  • Early-payment and regional waivers, common, and often decided by deadline instead of competition.
  • Chevening, the UK government’s fully funded master’s scholarship, highly competitive, requires work experience.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships, for students from Commonwealth countries including Bangladesh.

Apply for the university’s own scholarships first. They have the highest hit rate. Plenty of students spend a whole season rewriting a Chevening application and never send the one email asking what their chosen department gives a Bangladeshi applicant with their exact results. More on where the money really comes from in scholarships for Bangladeshi students.

The Graduate Route, and the date that shortens it

The Graduate visa is post-study work permission: after you successfully complete an eligible course, you can stay and work in most jobs, or be self-employed, without a sponsor. For a great many Bangladeshi students it is the whole reason the UK is on the list at all.

It is also on a timer, and the timer is public. Finish a bachelor’s or master’s and the Graduate visa gives you two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027 onwards. A PhD or other doctoral qualification gets three years either way. The application itself costs £937, plus the healthcare surcharge at the standard rate of £1,035 for each year you will be in the UK — noticeably more per year than the student rate you paid the first time.

Three conditions do most of the damage. You have to be inside the UK when you apply, so a graduate who flies home to Dhaka the week results come out and applies from there has no application. Your university has to have told the Home Office that you completed the course, which does not happen the instant marks are published. And the Graduate visa cannot be extended: you either switch to something else, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, or you leave.

Which means the switch is a first-term problem, not a final-semester one. Eighteen months feels generous in September and does not feel generous once you are hunting for a sponsoring employer in your last term. If post-study work is the point of the plan, compare what Australia and Canada offer before you commit — Australia ties the length of its Temporary Graduate visa to your qualification level, and Canada ties its post-graduation work permit to the programme you enrol in.

Why Bangladeshi applications get refused

Refusals are rarely about weak grades. The recurring causes are: financial documents that do not meet the exact holding-period rule, inconsistencies between your application and your interview answers, a study plan that does not connect logically to your background, and the wrong version of the English test. All four are avoidable.

What the credibility interview is really testing

Nobody publishes a question list, and anyone selling you one is selling you a script. The interview tests whether the person answering is the person the file describes. If your application says you want to study supply chain management because of your years in a garments buying house, you should be able to talk about that without effort.

The students who struggle are the ones whose statement of purpose was written for them. They know what the paragraph says. They cannot explain why it says it. That gap shows immediately, and it shows fastest on the money questions — who paid for what, when, and why the balance looks the way it does.

Frequently asked questions

How much bank statement is required for a UK student visa from Bangladesh?

Tuition plus living costs. GOV.UK sets the living-cost element at £1,529 per month if you will be studying in London and £1,171 per month outside London, for up to 9 months. Those rates are revised periodically, so take the current figure from gov.uk or from the university rather than from a forum post or a senior who applied two years ago.

How many days do I need to keep the money in my account?

28 consecutive days, and that 28-day period must end within 31 days of the date you apply. Both numbers are published by GOV.UK. Money that arrives during the week you submit does not count towards the requirement, no matter how large the balance is, so start the clock well before the CAS lands.

Is CAS the same as an offer letter?

They are different documents at different stages. You get an offer first, usually conditional; you meet the conditions to make it unconditional; you pay the deposit; and only then does the university issue the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). The visa application needs the CAS, not the offer letter.

How long is the UK Graduate Route after a master’s?

Two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027 onwards. A PhD or other doctorate gets three years. You must be in the UK when you apply, your university must have confirmed your completion to the Home Office, and the visa cannot be extended — you switch to another route, such as Skilled Worker, or you leave.

Why do UK student visas get refused for Bangladeshi students?

Four causes come up again and again: financial documents that do not meet the exact holding-period rule, inconsistencies between the application and the interview answers, a study plan with no logical link to your background, and the wrong version of the English test. Grades are rarely the problem.

What questions do they ask in the UK credibility interview?

There is no published list. What is being checked is whether your answers match your application and whether your reason for choosing this course, at this university, follows from what you have already studied or done. If someone else wrote your statement, this is where it shows.

Can I take my wife with me on a UK student visa in 2026?

Only in narrow cases. GOV.UK allows dependants if you are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months, or a full-time postgraduate student on a course at RQF level 7 or above lasting 9 months or more — and for courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, that postgraduate course must be a PhD or other doctorate (RQF level 8) or another research-based higher degree. A taught one-year master’s does not qualify. Check the current position on gov.uk before you commit money on the assumption that a family member can come.

Can I get into a UK university straight after HSC, without a foundation year?

Many universities accept HSC directly, others require a foundation year or an International Year One, and it is decided institution by institution rather than nationally. Ask the specific university about the specific course, and do not accept a general answer about “UK universities”.

When should I start applying for the September intake?

12 to 18 months ahead is comfortable, because shortlisting, conditional offers, English results, deposits, CAS issuance and the financial holding period all take real time in sequence. Note also that you cannot submit the visa application itself more than 6 months before your course starts. Starting three months before a September intake is late.
