Study in Australia from Bangladesh: a practical 2026 guide
The subclass 500 visa, the Genuine Student requirement, intakes, costs and work rights — explained for Bangladeshi applicants.

Can you explain, in your own words and without help, why this course and not the one your friend chose?
Answer that badly and the rest of the file does not matter. Australia checks affordability and English like everywhere else, then asks why you are going, in a written statement, and reads the answer. Applicants with better grades than yours get refused on that question every intake.
The pull is real. Strong universities, work rights during study that you can actually use, post-study work tied to the qualification you finish with. Refusals come from somewhere else entirely: treating the visa as paperwork instead of an argument.
Australian student visa policy, including financial requirements and post-study work length, is revised regularly. Verify on the Department of Home Affairs site before you commit to a deposit. Anything a senior tells you about “the rule” should be treated as a starting point for checking, not as the answer.
Entry requirements for Bangladeshi students
- Undergraduate: HSC or equivalent. Depending on your results and the university, you may enter directly or through a foundation / diploma pathway that gives credit toward the degree.
- Postgraduate: a recognised bachelor’s degree; competitive programmes look for a stronger CGPA and, for MBA-type courses, work experience.
- English: IELTS, PTE Academic and TOEFL are widely accepted. Required scores differ by course and by visa. A course may admit you at one score while the visa requires another.
Admission and immigration are two separate gates with two separate keys, and that distinction causes more confusion in agency offices than anything else on this page. An offer letter in your hand does not mean the score on your certificate satisfies the visa. Ask both questions separately, and get both answers on something you can point to later.
The pathway route is underrated here too. A diploma or foundation year that carries credit toward the degree is not a consolation prize for weak results; where your HSC subjects do not line up with the degree you want, it can be the shorter road overall. Ask what credit transfers and how many semesters it removes.
The Student visa (subclass 500), and the money it asks you to show
Almost all international students study in Australia on the subclass 500 visa. The core requirements:
What you must have
- CoE — Confirmation of Enrolment from a registered (CRICOS) provider
- Genuine Student (GS) requirement — the replacement for the older GTE test; you explain your study choice, background and plans in a structured written response
- Financial capacity, meaning evidence covering tuition, living costs and travel
- OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) for your full stay
- Health and character requirements, including a medical examination
Two of those five carry numbers. On financial capacity, the Australian government’s published threshold is AUD 29,710 in living costs for a twelve-month stay, and that figure comes on top of your course fees and your travel costs, not inclusive of them. The visa application charge has moved sharply too: from 1 July 2026 student visa applications start at AUD 2,500. Convert both to taka before you decide anything, because together they are a larger number than most families have been quoted.
Note the word “registered” in the first item too. A CoE only counts if it comes from a CRICOS-registered provider, for a CRICOS-registered course, and the course code on your offer has to match the register. That check takes minutes and we walk through it in the two Australian registers every offer should be run through.
The Genuine Student requirement, and how to write one
This is not a formality, and treating it as one is how strong students get refused.
You are asked to explain your circumstances, why this course, why Australia, and how it fits your career. Generic, copied or agent-written answers are the most common reason applications fail. Write it yourself, and make the logic from your background to your chosen course obvious.
What “obvious logic” means in practice
Think of the assessor reading your file as somebody who knows nothing about you and has your transcript, your work history and your course choice on one screen. Your job is to make the line between those three things impossible to miss.
A student who finished a BBA in accounting and is applying for a master’s in data analytics has a perfectly good story: the work was drowning in spreadsheets, the analysis was the interesting part, the qualification does not exist at the level they want at home. That is a real answer. Write that. What does not work is a paragraph explaining that Australia has a world-class education system and a multicultural society, which is true of the brochure and tells the assessor nothing about you.
If you have a study gap
The GS response asks about your circumstances, and a gap is a circumstance. Account for it plainly: what you were doing, why, and how it connects to what you now want to study. The problem is never the gap by itself. The problem is a course with no visible connection to your previous study or work, and a gap makes that disconnection louder.
The template trap
Somewhere in Dhanmondi there is a Word file that has been submitted with a different name at the top many times over. Same three paragraphs, same phrasing, same career goal. Assessors read these applications all day.
Write it in your own English, even if your own English is plainer. A good consultancy will check whether your logic holds and whether you have left something out. It should not be supplying the story. If someone offers to write it for you, that is the moment to read our guide on how to choose and verify a study abroad consultancy in Bangladesh.
Where the refusals come from
- Treating the Genuine Student statement as paperwork instead of an argument
- Choosing a course that has no visible connection to your previous study or work
- Underestimating the funds requirement, or using documents that cannot be explained
- Missing that your course requires a higher English score than the university’s general minimum
All four are self-inflicted. None is about being a weak student, and each is settled months before anyone opens your file.
February or July: choosing your intake
- February (Semester 1) is the main intake, with the widest choice.
- July (Semester 2) is the strong second intake; most universities offer it.
- November is limited, mainly at some private and pathway providers.
Australian semesters do not align with the northern-hemisphere calendar, so plan around a February or July start rather than “September” habits picked up from friends applying to the UK. This catches Bangladeshi families out constantly, because the whole conversation at home is built around a September calendar.
Work backwards. An offer, then a CoE, then financial evidence, then health and character checks, then the visa decision. Each has its own waiting time, and the queue does not care about your emotional deadline. Our guide to intake planning covers how far ahead to start.
What studying in Australia costs
Budget in the same three parts as any destination, and note that Sydney and Melbourne cost meaningfully more than regional cities. Studying in a designated regional area can also carry additional post-study advantages, which is worth raising with the institution directly.
- Tuition, published per course, per year
- Living, meaning accommodation, transport and food; the government’s AUD 29,710 threshold is what the visa assessment measures you against
- One-off: the visa application charge, OSHC premium, flights, medical
That AUD 29,710 is a pass mark, not a budget — the government’s own guidance says living costs vary across Australia and may run higher than the visa figure. Families in Dhaka tend to plan against tuition alone, because tuition is the number printed on the brochure, and then discover the rest in the first month. Add it all up in taka before you decide, using the first-year cost checklist, and ask the institution for a total first-year figure including OSHC and student services fees.
Work rights during study, and what happens after you graduate
Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, with no limit during scheduled course breaks or once the course is finished. Students who have started a master’s by research or a doctoral degree have no hour limit at all. The cap has changed more than once in recent years, so confirm the current figure instead of budgeting on hearsay from someone who arrived a few intakes ago.
And do not build your funding plan around those hours. Visa assessors expect you to demonstrate funds regardless, so a plan that depends on a job you do not yet have fails at the financial capacity stage before you ever land. The country-by-country rules are set out in our guide to part-time work rules for international students.
After graduation, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is the route most students take. Its length depends on what you finished: the Post-Higher Education Work stream usually runs two to three years depending on your qualification, while the Post-Vocational Education Work stream is up to 18 months. You must be 35 or under when you apply (exceptions apply), must have held a Student visa in the previous six months, and — this is the part that reaches back into your very first decision — your qualification must come from a CRICOS-registered course.
So the course you accept in your first week of research is already deciding what you are allowed to do four years later. If post-study work is the whole point of going, put the two systems side by side before you choose a country: the UK’s Graduate Route is a fixed length that does not depend on your field, and Canada’s post-graduation work permit is tied to the specific programme you enrol in.
Scholarships, and what to ask in person
- University scholarships and fee reductions are the most realistic route, frequently merit-based and applied automatically at offer stage.
- Australia Awards are Australian government scholarships, highly competitive, with a development focus.
- Faculty and country-specific awards are often unadvertised outside the university’s own site. Ask the representative directly what a Bangladeshi applicant with your profile qualifies for.
Faculty awards are where the unadvertised money is. No institution emails you about an award you did not know existed. You have to ask, by name, with your results in front of them. More on this in scholarships for Bangladeshi students.
Which is the argument for doing this face to face. Australian institutions and their representatives attend BIEE each edition; bring transcripts and any English result and an eligibility check plus a total-cost figure takes about ten minutes at the stall. Bring the harder questions too — the CRICOS code, the English score the visa needs as opposed to the one the course needs, and what your exact results qualify for. See how education fairs in Bangladesh work before you go.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement?
It is the replacement for the older GTE test, and it is part of the subclass 500 visa. You explain your study choice, background and plans in a structured written response covering your circumstances, why this course, why Australia, and how it fits your career.
How do I write the Genuine Student statement?
Write it yourself, and make the logic from your background to your chosen course obvious to someone who knows nothing about you. Generic, copied or agent-written answers are the most common reason strong applications get refused, so a consultancy should be checking your reasoning rather than supplying it.
Will Australia accept my application if I have a study gap?
The GS response asks about your circumstances, which is exactly where a gap belongs. Explain what you were doing and how it leads to the course you have chosen. What causes trouble is a course with no visible connection to your previous study or work.
How much IELTS do I need for an Australian student visa (subclass 500)?
There is no single score. Required scores differ by course and by visa, and a course may admit you at one score while the visa requires another. Ask the institution for the course requirement and check the visa requirement separately on the Home Affairs site.
How much money do I need to show for an Australian student visa?
The Australian government’s published figure is AUD 29,710 in living costs for twelve months, and that comes on top of your course fees and travel costs. It is revised periodically, so take the current number from Home Affairs or Study Australia rather than from a forum, and remember it is a visa threshold, not a realistic budget for a Sydney share house.
How much does the Australian student visa cost?
From 1 July 2026, student visa applications start at AUD 2,500 unless you are exempt. Budget it as a one-off alongside the OSHC premium, flights and the medical examination, and convert it to taka at the rate you will get, not a headline rate.
What is OSHC?
Overseas Student Health Cover, and you must hold it for your full stay in Australia. The premium is a one-off budget line alongside the visa application charge, flights and the medical examination, so include it when you ask an institution for a total first-year cost.
Which intake should I apply for, February or July?
February (Semester 1) is the main intake with the widest choice of courses. July (Semester 2) is a strong second intake offered by most universities. November exists but is limited, mainly at some private and pathway providers.
How many hours can I work on an Australian student visa?
Up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks and after your course finishes. Students who have started a master’s by research or a doctoral degree have no hour limit. The cap has changed before, so confirm it before you rely on it.
Can I pay for my studies with part-time work in Australia?
No, and planning that way will hurt your application. Forty-eight hours a fortnight covers groceries, transport and a phone bill, not tuition, and visa assessors expect you to demonstrate funds regardless. A funding plan that depends on a job you do not yet have fails at the financial capacity stage.
How long is the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)?
The Post-Higher Education Work stream usually runs two to three years depending on your qualification; the Post-Vocational Education Work stream is up to 18 months. You must be 35 or under when you apply (exceptions apply), must have held a Student visa in the previous six months, and your qualification must come from a CRICOS-registered course.
