Study in Canada from Bangladesh: a practical 2026 guide

The study permit, the PAL requirement, proof of funds, and what changed after SDS closed — for applicants from Bangladesh.

Updated for the 2026 intake season · Bangladesh International Education Expo

Canada built its reputation with Bangladeshi students on three things: recognised degrees, a clear post-study work route, and a settlement pathway at the end of it. All three still exist — but the rules around them have tightened significantly since 2024.

If you are relying on advice from someone who applied three years ago, most of what you have been told is out of date.

Canada has changed its student rules repeatedly since 2024 — including study permit caps, the attestation letter requirement, proof-of-funds levels and post-graduation work permit eligibility. Verify every requirement on IRCC before you pay any deposit.

What you need

A DLI offer

You can only study on a permit at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Not every college in Canada is one, and not every DLI programme leads to a post-graduation work permit. Check the DLI number and the programme’s PGWP eligibility before accepting an offer — this is the single most expensive mistake Bangladeshi students make in Canada.

Academic and English requirements

  • Undergraduate: HSC or equivalent; some programmes require specific subject results.
  • Postgraduate / PG diploma: a recognised bachelor’s degree. College PG diplomas have lower bars than university master’s programmes — and different outcomes.
  • English: IELTS is most common. PTE, TOEFL and CELPIP are accepted by many institutions. Required bands vary by programme, not by country.

Study permit document checklist

  • Valid passport
  • Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) — required for most applicants since 2024; your institution issues it
  • Proof of financial support meeting the current IRCC threshold
  • Statement of purpose / study plan
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Medical examination from an IRCC panel physician
  • Biometrics

The PAL — the step that did not exist before 2024

Most study permit applications now need a Provincial Attestation Letter from the province where you will study. Your institution arranges it, but capacity is limited by provincial allocation. Practically, this means applying early matters more than it used to — a province can run out.

SDS is closed

The Student Direct Stream — the fast-track route that used a GIC and upfront tuition payment — was discontinued in late 2024. Applications from Bangladesh now go through the regular study permit stream. A GIC can still strengthen your proof of funds, but it no longer buys you the old processing speed. Anyone still promising you “SDS processing” is selling something that does not exist.

Proof of funds

You must show tuition plus living costs for yourself and any accompanying family. IRCC raised the living-cost threshold in 2024 and has indicated it will be reviewed periodically — check the current figure rather than an older one. Funds should have a traceable, explainable history; large unexplained deposits made shortly before applying are a recurring refusal trigger.

Intakes

  • September (Fall) — main intake, widest programme choice, most funding
  • January (Winter) — strong second intake, offered widely
  • May (Summer) — smaller, mostly at colleges and for selected programmes

Work backwards: PAL issuance, medical, biometrics and permit processing all take time. Six to eight months before your intake is a comfortable start; three is not.

Working during and after study

Study permit holders may work off campus a capped number of hours during study terms, with more allowed during scheduled breaks. That cap has been changed more than once recently — confirm the current limit.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) remains the main draw, but eligibility narrowed in 2024–25: your institution type and, for some categories, your field of study now affect whether you qualify and for how long. Confirm PGWP eligibility for your specific programme in writing before enrolling.

Costs

Budget in three parts, and expect wide variation between provinces and between universities and colleges:

  • Tuition — published per programme, per year
  • Living — Toronto and Vancouver are substantially more expensive than the prairie and Atlantic provinces
  • One-off — permit fee, biometrics, medical, GIC (if used), flights, first accommodation deposit

Scholarships

Canada offers less institutional funding to international undergraduates than the UK or Australia — this surprises people. The realistic routes:

  • University entrance scholarships — merit-based, often automatic, usually partial
  • Graduate funding — research assistantships and supervisor-funded positions at master’s and PhD level, which is where the real money is
  • Vanier CGS and similar national awards — doctoral, extremely competitive

If funding matters to you, a research-based master’s with a supervisor beats a taught PG diploma on cost, every time.

Common mistakes

  • Enrolling at an institution or in a programme that does not lead to a PGWP
  • Assuming SDS still exists, and planning the timeline around it
  • Proof of funds that cannot be explained — source of money matters as much as amount
  • A study plan that does not connect your previous education to the chosen programme
  • Leaving PAL and medical to the last month

Canadian institutions and their authorised representatives attend BIEE each edition. Bring transcripts and your English result, and ask two questions at every stall: is this programme PGWP-eligible, and what is the total first-year cost.
